Newsroom Ready: Poverty rates fall to 10-year low, Statistics Canada says
Statistics Canada says there are fewer people living in poverty in Canada with 8.7 per cent falling below the country's low-income threshold. Speaking about the numbers, Social Development Minister Ahmed Hussen, the federal minister in charge of anti-poverty efforts, links declines in recent years of more than one million people to his government’s policies. He says there is still more to do to help the 3.2 million Canadians still living in poverty.
