Newsroom Ready: Polytechnique engineers design low-cost, robust Japanese kirigami-inspired parachute

Researchers at Polytechnique Montreal have created a parachute concept inspired by the Japanese art of kirigami, one that engineers hope could be used in everything from humanitarian aid airdrops to scientific exploration. The innovative project, which earned the researchers a spot in the science journal "Nature," saw engineers create a low-cost parachute using simple everyday plastic and cardboard with the option to make the chute recyclable, reusable or even biodegradable.
