Thunberg in Edmonton on Friday for climate strike
Alberta Premier Jason Kenney hopes Greta Thunberg recognizes the province's oil and gas industry efforts to reduce its emissions. Thunberg is expected to join a march from a downtown Edmonton park to a climate strike rally at the Alberta legislature on Friday. Kenney has stated there are no plans to meet with the Swedish climate activist but hopes she receives a warm welcome. The Stolkholm student has been making international headlines for lambasting world leaders who she accuses of letting down youth by doing too little to tackle climate change. Kenney says the world continues to depend on fossil fuel energy and it's better that Canada supply it rather than countries such as Saudi Arabia or Russia. Environment Minister Jason Nixon said he's not aware of anyone from government attending Friday's rally and he won't be meeting with Thunberg. Opposition NDP Leader Rachel Notley said members of her caucus attended another climate rally last month and it's possible they will be there on Friday as well.
